Our company began with founder Ralph Haberfeld, the Chairman of Haberfeld Associates. After receiving his MBA from Harvard University, Mr. Haberfeld started his career in 1974 by joining MCS Associates, a financial institutions general management-consulting firm. Since then, he has been acknowledged as the originator of account acquisition through checking account marketing.

During his time at MCS Associates, Mr. Haberfeld began the research that led to some radical conclusions about checking account marketing and profitability. Through years of observation, market research, and the application of economic principles, he discovered that:

• Checking accounts are inherently strategic and so valuable that banks should want as many as they can get.
• People choose their bank primarily for convenience.
• Having good product – including a free account – is critical.
• Overdraft income is very valuable.
• With good policies, product, training, and marketing, a bank can significantly increase openings.

Mr. Haberfeld’s first group of clients trusted these recommendations – which were revolutionary then but are conventional wisdom today – and achieved remarkable results: 1,360 gross new checking accounts per office, per year.

Since that first group of clients – and our official founding on January 1, 1989 – we’ve grown in size and scope. Today, our more than 60 employees work with more than 130 banks, helping them become the dominant bank within their respective markets by using our High Performance Checking strategy. Our clients operate in urban, suburban, small town, and rural environments in nearly all 50 states. They range in size from single-branch community banks to large multi-state regional banks with as many as 350 locations.
